Independent, corporate, joint-venture and charity-model clinics can all provide good care and all can produce a painful bill. The useful questions are: who sets the price list, where you go at 2am, and whether you can get a written estimate before surgery. The CMA's 2026 remedies — Order expected September 2026, group ownership transparency from **March 2027** — exist because many owners did not know their "family vet" sat inside a national group ([GOV.UK guidance](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/what-veterinary-businesses-and-vets-need-to-do-following-the-cmas-final-vets-report), checked 12 August 2026). They may belong to **buying groups** for drugs and equipment without selling the business. Owners often value local decision-making and seeing the same vets for years. Independents still need a credible out-of-hours arrangement — many partner with a dedicated emergency clinic. Confirm that number **before** you need it. Major UK corporate owners include **IVC Evidensia**, **CVS Group**, **Medivet**, **Linnaeus**, **VetPartners** and **Pets at Home** (including **Vets4Pets** and **Companion Care**). Branches often keep local names — "Oak Tree Vets" may belong to a national group. Corporate ownership can bring group referral hospitals, standardised protocols and published group price lists. It can also mean fees and plans set centrally. Neither is automatically better. Some **Vets4Pets** and **Companion Care** branches are **joint ventures**: a local veterinary partner plus Pets at Home infrastructure, often inside a retail store. Ask who you will see for a routine consult, where you go out of hours, and whether prices follow a group list. ## What about not-for-profit clinics? **Animal Trust** and some charity-affiliated clinics operate as not-for-profit or community-interest models. Anyone mid-treatment, anyone whose pet has a complex history at that branch, and anyone in an emergency. Switching has a cost: transferring records, repeating exams, updating the microchip database. If the team is stable and the fees are clear, a new group name in the footer is information, not an eviction notice.
