Some practices also hold voluntary **RCVS Practice Standards Scheme** accreditation — an extra inspection, not a ranking. Check the official RCVS register, then use find a vet for published hours, fees and ownership. Skip badge-hunting in an emergency. ## Should you only use an RCVS-accredited practice? No. **Registration** is the legal must-have; **PSS accreditation** is optional. Plenty of competent practices never join the scheme. Use Find a Vet to confirm the people treating your animal are on the Register, then compare practical factors — distance, species, out-of-hours, and a written estimate. It is not a league table and it is not a reason to delay care. ## What does RCVS registration actually mean? The **Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons** regulates the profession in the UK. Anyone calling themselves a veterinary surgeon must be on the RCVS Register. Registered Veterinary Nurses are regulated too.
