Paying less for pet medicines — your rights
- You can ask any UK vet for a written prescription and buy the medicine from an online pharmacy instead of the practice — you do not have to buy it from your vet.
- Under the CMA's 2026 veterinary-market remedies — now phasing in across the UK — written-prescription fees are being capped at £21 for the first medicine and £12.50 for each additional medicine, and practices must publicise that "substantial savings are often available from online pharmacies".
- Buy only from online pharmacies accredited by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate — check the retailer on the VMD register (AIRS) before ordering.
Typical medicine and treatment costs: see our UK vet costs guide. Looking for human family pharmacy services? Compare accredited UK pharmacies on Pick My Pharmacy.
